Newspaper Articles | The 54th Regiment, New York State
National Guard, was one of two militia units located in Rochester, NY during
the Civil War period. The 54th, along with the 1st Independent Battalion
- the Union Grays - was mustered in the the United States service in the
summer of 1864 and served one hundred days at the Union prisoner of war
camp in Elmira, NY.
My interest in the 54th stems from the fact that my great grandfather, Captain Francis Gallery Maloney, was a member of the 54th and in 1864 he commanded Co. I of the regiment. Later he was promoted to Major and served on the Regimental Staff. |
